Depending on your perspective, WiFi and mobile Internet may go together as well as oil and vinegar or as poorly as oil and water. Initially accepted with cautious hesitation and skepticism, WiFi connectivity has arguably found its way into homes, offices, coffee shops, trains and aircraft with such success that both wireline and wireless carriers are being forced to examine how to leverage the technology to avoid it eroding revenues in their aging business models.

WiFi, it’s not just for laptops anymore. Frank Dickson, Vice President of Research, In-Stat recently stated that “By 2010, In-Stat anticipates that 20% of the total WiFi chipsets will be used in mobile phones as manufacturers, currently led by Nokia, continue to ship an increasing number of WiFi enabled handsets.” While VoIP handsets employing 802.11 wireless technologies have become commonplace in enterprise PBX environments the shift to integrating WiFi into 3G and 4G handsets and mobile Internet devices and the ever increasing availability of WiFi connectivity presents both challenge and opportunity.

Carrier business models that have been designed to derive application revenues through subscription are being challenged by the connectivity options offered by the mobile Internet. Whether connectivity occurs over a 4G network or WiFi, many wireless carriers are struggling with how to continue to insert themselves in the mobile Internet value chain. For carriers who opt to exercise control over application access the immediate answer seems simple enough. As an example, some have chosen to implement IP port blocking to prevent portal access from users originating connections to applications from WiFi. Is this a viable approach, even in the short term?

Speaking to an audience at Mobile Internet World 2007, father of the Internet, Tim Berners-Lee cautioned, “The mobile internet must use the same standards as the Internet. When you erect a wall around the garden, we know now all the flowers bloom outside the wall, not inside.” But WiFi connectivity doesn’t need to be an obstacle to profitable revenue blooms for carriers. WiFi in fact presents some unique and compelling opportunities to generate new and retain existing revenues.

Mobile billing solutions provider Bango suggests an approach that would have operators employ a mobile billing platform that allows mobile payment over WiFi connections. The upside for the operator is reasonably obvious – users pay for access regardless of how they choose to connect to the application. Such a solution might also prove valuable to content providers as well, however that success may be largely dependent upon a carrier or operator’s willingness to collaborate to provide access. Sharing control or at least shifting some of that control to users or content and application providers will be key to the success of solutions such as Bango’s.

WiFi has established itself as a capable and secure technology that has an important role to play in the mobile Internet ecosystem. Deployments of WiFi networks are most often the result of end user investment and with the growing trend of more WiFi enabled mobile devices, the need for integration into the mobile Internet is critical.

In what looks to be shaping up to be another healthy week for M&A activity, Sprint Nextel is putting more of its focus on the prepaid cell phone service market with a $483 million deal to buy out Virgin Mobile USA . The acquisition, which was announced earlier this morning, calls for Sprint to pay $5.50 in stock for each Virgin Mobile share, a 31 percent premium to the MVNO’s closing share price Monday of $4.21. The deal is expected to receive approval either in the fall or in early 2010. Sprint Nextel actually already owned 13.1 percent of Virgin Mobile, which uses the carrier’s network to offer service to some 5.2 million subscribers. The deal cancels out Virgin’s $248 million in outstanding debts and will unite Sprint’s Boost service and Virgin Mobile under the same roof. Sprint says it would keep the Virgin Mobile brand and let Virgin Mobile USA’s CEO Dan Schulman, run Sprint’s entire prepaid business if and when the deal closes late this year or early next.
